We may get a second Oscar-winning Japanese animated movie soon, as the Mamoru Hosoda and Studio Chizu’s Mirai, received an Oscar nomination. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has recently announced the nominees for the 91st Academy Awards, and it includes Mirai.
The Academy nominated Mirai for the Best Animated Feature Film category. However, it would have to go through tough competition to win that Oscar. Its opponents include Incredibles 2, Isle of Dogs, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The latter of these recently won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film.
As we all know by now, the only Japanese animated movie to win an Oscar is Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away back in 2003. If Hosoda does win the Oscar, he will be the second Japanese anime director to win one. This puts him in the same category as Hayao Miyazaki.
Mirai ain’t the only Japanese movie with the Oscar nomination though. This is because Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Shoplifters also received one for the Best Foreign Language Film category. It will go against Capernum, Cold War, Never Look Away, and Roma.
The 91st annual Academy Awards will announce the winners during the awarding ceremony on February 24, 2019.
