Unlimited Budget Works? ufotable reportedly owes 400 million yen in taxes according to Bunshun magazine
ufotable is known for its beautiful animation sequences, which are not only clean and clear, but also very eye catching. These types of animation which the studio employs aren’t cheap at all, so fans often dub the studio’s works as “Unlimited Budget Works”, referring to one of their most famous series, Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works. If you watch their anime, it really does seem that they have an unlimited budget. However, Weekly Bunshun Digital magazine reported that the renowned animation studio ain’t actually paying their taxes. In fact, they cited a source from the Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau which says that ufotable owes the Japanese government about 400 million yen in taxes.
The report stated that the authorities suspect that the studio has been misappropriating finds from a charity auction from the great touhoku earthquake of 2011. This is a clear violation of the Penal Code and may see jail time for some of its executives for up to 10 years.
The magazine also cited a source from inside the studio for their information. The source also said that president Hikaru Kondo has been stayinmg at home and consulting a lawyer since the first investigation surfaced. However, he’s now back working in the company’s Suginami Studio. He’s also one of the people in hot water within the company right now. The previous report stated that Kondo allegedly received merchandise sales revenue directly.
So far, no charges have been filed against Kondo and the studio, and the investigation is still ongoing.
ufotable is best known for several Fate anime, including Unlimited Blade Works, Heaven’s Feel, and Fate/Zero. They also produced the God Eater anime, as well as the animations for the game. The studio is currently producing the Spring 2019 anime, Kimetsu no Yaiba.
