UPDATE: NHK now reports that Multiple People are dead, though Kyoto police did not mention how many yet.
Japan and the animation industry are in shock as one of the most iconic animation studios in the country burns down. People saw a man in his 40’s pouring flammable liquid into the building of renowned anime studio, Kyoto Animation, and then lit it up. Residents who reported the fire also reported an explosion.
And this isn’t just one of Kyoto Animation’s side studio, but their actual main studio in the Fushimi area in Kyoto. It’s located just 20 minutes away from the studio’s offices in Uji City.
Sankei News has reported that 38 people have been taken to the hospital with either major and minor injuries. Nine of them are unconscious while one has sadly passed away. At the time of writing, rescue operations are still underway, as several people are still reportedly trapped.
As for the suspected arsonist, All Nippon News has reported that the Kyoto Police now have him in custody.
Kyoto Animation is best known for popular anime works, such as Lucky Star, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, K-On!, and Sound! Euphonium.
