Last August 15, Kingdom mangaka Yasuhisa Hara attended a roundtable discussion with Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. And it seems that the mangaka is a huge fan of the show, and admits it has inspired some of Kingdom’s characters. In fact. Hara admitted that he insisted that the live-action Kingdom movie have the character of Sei Kyou take inspiration from none other than the much-hated Joffrey Baratheon!
Hara admits that “It’s easy to create a flimsy villain, but it’s very difficult to create a loathsome yet charismatic villain. I think that Joffrey from Game of Thrones is the best villain. Sei Kyou in the Kingdom manga is lacking as a villain in parts because of my inexperience as a creator at that time. When we were making the film, the first thing I did was tell everyone, ‘Look at Joffrey.'”. He also added that Sei Kyou holds the key for the live-action Kingdom film.
As for the Game of Thrones showrunners, Benioff and Weiss also showed some love for Kingdom. They commented how the movie’s trailer had excellent visuals, and it even conveyed the story well. And for Game of Thrones itself, Benioff said that they took visual inspiration from Akira Kurosawa’s Ran. Kurosawa himself took inspiration from Shakespeare, and noted that no matter the country, great works really influence each other.
The round table event was to promote the Blu-ray release of Season 8 of Game of Thrones, as well as the home video release of the live-action Kingdom movie.
