Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You ain’t just gunning for two Oscar nominations, but two! After Japan submitted it for best International Film, the anime has also submitted itself for nomination for Best Animated Feature Film. Three other films are also vying for that Academy Award nomination, and they include TRIGGER’s Promare, Studio 4°C’s Children of the Sea, and Okko’s Inn from Madhouse and DLE.

Weathering With You’s submission will be the first time that a Japanese anime film is gunning for two Oscars. One being the Best Animated Feature Film, and the other being the Best International film. However, they are up against some tough competition, with Toy Story 4 and Frozen II being clear favourites.

The full list of films submitting for a Best Animated Film nomination include:

The Addams Family
The Angry Birds Movie 2
Another Day of Life
Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles
Children of the Sea
Dilili in Paris
Frozen II
Genndy Tartakovsky’s ‘Primal’ – Tales of Savagery
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
I Lost My Body
The Last Fiction
The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part
Marona’s Fantastic Tale
Missing Link
Ne Zha
Okko’s Inn
The Secret Life of Pets 2
Spies in Disguise
The Swallows of Kabul
This Magnificent Cake!
The Tower
Toy Story 4
Upin & Ipin: The Lone Gibbon Kris
Weathering With You
White Snake

If Weathering With You would win the Best International Film Oscar, Makoto Shinkai would do something Hayao Miyazaki hasn’t done, and that is win an Oscar in that category. Miyazaki previously won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature film in 2003, for the Ghibli film, Spirited Away. The anime film still stands as the only Japanese animated film to win an Academy Award.
