Vinland Saga is definitely one of the hottest and most critically-acclaimed anime this year. And now, it seems that its source manga is heading for its conclusion. This is because mangaka Makoto Yukimura announced via Tweet that he has now started drawing the manga’s fourth and final arc.
Yukimura explained that Vinland Saga’s story is divided into four arcs. These are the “War” arc, the “Slavery” arc, and the “Eastern Exploration” arc, as well as this upcoming “final arc”. However, just because the manga is entering the final arc won’t mean that it will end next year. In fact, the mangaka explained that this final arc will have 50 chapters, over 1,000 pages, and will take several years to finish.
Set in the Viking Age of Dark Ages Europe, the manga has gained much notoriety and praise. Here’s how Kodansha describes the manga’s story:
Thorfinn is son to one of the Vikings’ greatest warriors, but when his father is killed in battle by the mercenary leader Askeladd, he swears to have his revenge. Thorfinn joins Askeladd’s band in order to challenge him to a duel, and ends up caught in the middle of a war for the crown of England.
Of course, the manga received plenty of awards. the Best General Manga award in Kodansha’s 36th Annual Manga Awards in 2012, as well as the Grand Prize in the manga division in the Ministry of Cultural Affairs’ 13th Japan Media Arts Festival Awards in 2009.
