We’ve seen many works where aspiring idols, actresses, and other entertainers are forced into indecent acts by unscrupulous male corporate executives. Well, it looks like that practice really is happening in Japan. Police just arrested the 50-year old representative director of anime studio, Gainax, Tomohiro Maki, on the charge of quasi-forcible indecency. Police alleged that he was committing indecent acts on an aspiring seiyuu. This includes taking nude photos of the said aspiring seiyuu, who is still in her teens.
Maki also manages a production company, and the aspiring seiyuu had signed a voice acting contract with that company. That aspiring seiyuu is still in her late teens, and Maki allegedly sexually harassed her four times in February. This apparently happened in his company’s Girl’s Dormitory in Tokyo. The woman reported the incident that month as well, and police questioned the anime studio executive about those acts. He denied the accusations. The victim also claimed that the Gainax representative director inappropriately touched her, claiming to massage her because her feet were swollen. She also reported that he took photographs of her. To this, Maki said that he only took them because he was “asked to”.
Gainax is responsible for many beloved anime works, from Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt to FLCL to Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. They’re also responsible for the original 1995 TV anime called Evangelion, which Studio Khara now handles. And because of Maki’s arrest, Khara has distanced itself with Gainax even further.
After several companies listed Evangelion as one of Gainax’s anime following Maki’s arrest, Studio Khara released a statement. It denied Maki’s involvement with the anime, as well as the Evangelion franchise itself. It also stated that Khara has no connections to him whatsoever. It also stated that Khara founder and Gainax co-founder Hideaki Anno and , as well as Khara board member and Evangelion anime director Kazuya Tsurumaki are not acquainted with Maki. They also emphasized that the studio, as well as Anno and Tsurumaki have no business relationship with Gainax, and Gainax no longer has any rights to the Evangelion franchise. Both Gainax and Khara are in an ongoing legal dispute over loan repayment at the moment.
