Cells At Work has a ton of spin-offs. However, the darkest one of them all has gotta be Cells At Work Black written by Shigemitsu Harada and illustrated by Issei Hatsuyoshi. As opposed to Cells At Work, Cells At Work Black follows the highly-stressed cells of an unhealthy person. This person has a ton of diseases, and also smokes and has a lot of other unhealthy vices. And now, Kodansha has released an animated PV for the manga:
The PV just promotes the manga though, and doesn’t state that the spin-off series is getting an anime adaptation. However, it does show how hard it is for cells to live and work in an unhealthy body.
Cells At Work! mangaka Akane Shimizu supervises the Cells At Work! Black manga. Meanwhile, Kodansha has released the series internationally as Cells at Work! Code Black. Here is how they describe its story:
The manga and anime Cells at Work! showed you what happens when a young, healthy body gets in trouble … but what if the body wasn’t so young, and was never very healthy? This new take stars a fresh-faced Red Blood Cell and his friend, the buxom White Blood Cell, as they struggle to keep themselves and their world together through alcoholism, smoking, erectile dysfunction, athlete’s foot, gout … it’s literal body horror! Whoever this guy is, he’s lucky his cells can’t go on strike!
