Netflix’s NX Twitter Page has released a statement from One Piece mangaka Eiichiro Oda himself. In the statement, Oda confirmed that a live-action One Piece series is indeed happening, and Netflix will stream it. The mangaka also revealed he will be supervising the first 10 episodes of the first season himself! Here is the statement:
I know I announced the production of this back in 2017, but these things take time! Preparations have been slowly progressing behind the scenes, and it seems that I can finally make the big announcement: Netflix, the world’s leading streaming entertainment service, will be lending us their tremendous production support! This is so encouraging!! How far will the story progress over the 10 episodes of Season 1? Who will be cast!? Please be patient a little longer and stay tuned!!
Tomorrow Studios, which is a partnership between Teen Wolf producer, Marty Adelstein and ITV Studios, will be producing this new TV series. This is the same studio tagged for the live-action Cowboy Bebop Hollywood TV series.
Oda previously said that in the 20 years he has worked with One Piece, the talks of a live-action adaptation always came up. Now, after plenty of twists and turns, the mangaka has now found “a good partner” to make that live-action adaptation. The statement was revealed during the 20th anniversary event, and Oda said that while he’s very happy, the day is all about One Piece’s 20th anniversary, and the announcement just coincided with the celebrations. However, he said that his condition for the live-action adaptation is that he would never betray the fans who supported him for 20 years. He then said to look forward for further announcements about the new show.
In a video call, Adelstein stated that the live-action TV series will start with the East Blue arc and will “broaden from there.” Adelstein stated that he discussed the project with mangaka Eiichiro Oda personally, and also stated that the series promises to create “a true One Piece”.
