It’s finally 2020 and we would like to greet everyone a Happy New Year! And with that, we are taking a look at all of last year’s anime and picked out what we felt was the best of the best. 2019 featured plenty of great series, but these are the ten anime which we loved the most last year. And after much debates, fist fights, and trials by combat, here are our picks for the Top 10 Best Anime of 2019:

10 – Fire Force

Fire Force was pretty overshadowed by some of the other anime this year, but none the less, it was pretty enjoyable. The story itself was pretty enjoyable, and its action was very nice. And this is also an anime from the mangaka behind Soul Eater, so it indeed has some pedigree to back it up.

9 – Ascendance of a Bookworm

We are heading off to isekai territory this time, and it’s yet another underrated anime, with Ascendance of a Bookworm. The series follows a book lover getting reincarnated into an alternate world as a sickly child. She would then use her knowledge from her former world in order to “invent” things, from cheaper paper to hair ornaments. Overall, it has lovable characters, a good story, and great world-building. A much-deserved season 2 is already on its way as well.

8 – Dororo

Three words: Osamu Freaking Tezuka.

The legendary Tezuka, who brought about Japan’s great manga and anime revolution in the 60’s, is behind this series, and it shows how much of a genius the late mangaka was. The anime adaptation, though not the first one for Dororo, sets a much darker and more violent tone. It had plenty of great action, as well as a ton of surprises, and is a must-watch for those into samurai anime.

7 – Astra Lost in Space

The science fiction genre is on the decline in Japan, with studios focusing more on the fantasy genre and musical genre, with isekai and idol anime being the most prevalent. However, Astra: Lost In Space has proven that SciFi is still very much relevant, with the adventures of several teenagers lost in the void of space being one of the anime with the best stories this year. And not only that, but it has so many twists and turns that the reality behind the teens’ origins, as well as why they were lost in space, is quite mindblowing indeed.

6 – The Promised Neverland

And speaking of plot twists, The Promised Neverland also has a ton of them! The anime is pretty much a battle of wits, and it has proven to be a harrowing thriller throughout. It is surely one of Shonen Jump’s best works, and it is holding its own against the magazine’s other big names this year, and that includes heavy hitters like My Hero Acadamia, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, and Dragon Ball.
