For the second time in a row, a certain anime series has beaten the ever-popular and always-favourite Sword Art Online. Japanese general hybrid bookstore service “honto” polled its users on which light novel which received an anime adaptation last year is the most popular. Now, one might expect Sword Art Online to win this one again as it is a popularity poll, and the series seems to take the #1 spot a lot. However, surprisingly, the anime only took 5th place! Here is the Top 5:

5 – Sword Art Online

  • Men – 67% / Women – 33%
  • 30s – 22% / 40s – 39%

4 – Demon Lord, Retry!

  • Men – 62% / Women – 38%
  • 40s – 50% / 50s – 25%

3 – Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?

  • Men – 95%
  • 30s – 32% / 40s – 32% / 50s – 23%

2 – The Case Files of Lord El-Melloi II

  • Men – 34% / Women – 66%
  • 20s – 17% / 30s – 38% / 50s – 28%

1 – Ascendance of a Bookworm

  • Men – 39% / Women – 61%
  • 30s – 16% / 40s – 38% / 50s – 25%

Much like the Akiba Souken poll, SAO finished in a much lower ranking than expected, while Ascendance of a Bookworm took 1st place. This may be because Ascendance of a Bookworm appeals to a more diverse demographic than SAO, as the latter appeals more to men and a much younger demographic, while the former is popular for both men and women, as well as older and younger viewers.
