Anime of the Year is regarded as the most prestigious award in the Japanese anime industry. For this year, animation professionals have voted for which anime deserves to win the coveted award during the Tokyo Anime Award Festival 2020 (TAAF). And now, the results are in, and the big winners are ufotable’s Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You!
100 anime titles, 80 TV anime and 20 movies, were in consideration to win the award. But in the end, these two works took home the big one! So congratulations on them both! Previous winners include Kemono Friends and In This Corner of the World, Love Live! School Idol Movie, Gintama, Shirobako, Tiger & Bunny the Rising, Ping Pong The Animation, Attack on Titan, The Wind Rises, A Silent Voice, and of course, Disney’s Frozen. Yes folks, Disney’s Frozen previously won the most prestigious award in anime!
Meanwhile. other winners include Uta no Prince Sama Maji Love Kingdom, which won the Fan Award. Demon Slayer mangaka Koyoharu Gotouge also won an award, winning Best Original Work. Meanwhile, Akira Matsushima received the Animator Award and composer Yuki Kajiura won the Sound and Performance Award.
The awards also recognised one of the people who passed away from the tragic Kyoto Animation arson fire. The late KyoAni art director Mikiko Watanabe won the Best Background Art Award, a posthomous honor that is certainly needed. May she rest in peace and justice be done.
