After playing Arata Wataya in the live-action Chihayafuru movies, Japanese actor Mackenyu is now joining the cast of the new live-action Rurouni Kenshin movies. He will be playing Enishi Yukishiro, and the staff have now revealed him in costume:
In addition, the staff also released a teaser photo of the main cast in costume. Aside from Satoh, it also features Emi Takei as Kaoru Kamiya, Munetaka Aoki as Sanosuke Sagara, and Yuu Aoi as Megumi Takani. Riku Oonishi is also joining the cast, replacing Kaito Ooyagi as Yahiko Myojin.
Director Keishi Otomo will be returning from the original trilogy to direct the two films. Warner Bros. has confirmed that these will be the final films for the franchise, and it will be covering the final arc from Watsuki’s beloved manga., which is the Jinchuu arc. “The Final” will follow Kenshin’s conflict with the mysterious arms dealer, Enishi. Meanwhile, The Beginning will be a prequel of sorts, and will tell the story of how Kenshin got his iconic scar.
Principal photography for the films have ended already, and they shot several scenes all over Japan. Rurouni Kenshin Saishuushou The Final will open first, on July 3, 2020. The second “final” film, Rurouni Kenshin Saishuushou The Beginning, will then open in August 7, 2020.
