In the 2000’s, cat magical girls were a thing. And one anime was all about these cat-themed magical girls, and it was Tokyo Mew Mew. And now, that anime is returning with a brand new project. It will be titled Tokyo Mew Mew New, and it will be basing on Reiko Yoshida and Mai Ikumi’s popular magical girl manga.

Unfortunately, the announcement did not reveal any further details. However, it looks like this new anime will have a new cast. Pony Canyon’s voice acting office, Swallow, is now holding general auditions for new female seiyuu. This is for the role of Ichigo Momomiya, the anime’s main character, The chosen seiyuu will perform idol activities in addition to voice acting work. In fact, Pony Canyon plans in debuting a new seiyuu group called “Tokyo Mew Mew New”. Saki Nakajima previously voiced the character in the original anime back in 2002.

Kodansha serializes the manga, and here’s how they describe its story:

On her first date with the cutest boy in school, Ichigo is exposed to a mysterious ray that meshes her DNA with that of the endangered Iriomote wildcat. She soon discovers that she has developed superhuman abilities and enhanced agility. Her new powers are put to the test when she leads a team with four other girls, each endowed with special abilities of their own. Together, they must now protect the Earth from an alien menace known as Deep Blue.

Expect the staff to reveal more details about the series in the days to come.
