When Domestic Girlfriend ended, overseas fans weren’t very happy with the ending. In fact, mangaka Kei Sasuga has been receiving a ton of threats and criticisms online, especially Twitter. And from the looks of things, majority of these criticisms come from overseas. In fact, Sasuga has admitted on Twitter that “it has been rough”. The criticisms has been in reaction to the final few chapters of the manga, which has divided a lot of fans, especially those outside Japan. They also come with the announcement that the manga will end on June 10.
There were also some fans who were praising Sasuga’s work, and he addressed them first. He told them that they lift his spirits. However, he also addressed those who weren’t too happy with where the story was going. He explains that he feels that a lot of the feelings and attittudes of the characters were not fully conveyed. Because of this, he is thinking of adding a bit more explanation in the tankoubon release. However, he does admit that those critics aren’t likely to buy the tankoubon. He also says that the magazine’s Reader Survey, which is the one which counts in rating how good the manga is doing, is positive. He says he’s not really hurt because of the Reader Survey having good results, though he feels a bit mean when he blocks those threatening him. And whenever he blocks an account, he also admits that a new account would come after him, so he feels blocking is somewhat useless. He now “braces himself” whenever he tweets, as he expects some mean replies.
Sasuga is now listening to advice from various people, and that includes refraining from looking at the comments. He promises that he will keep updating Pixiv though, and told fans that he is quite happy with all the support he receives from around the world.
Previously, Shounen Magazine announced that it will end with the 28th tankoubon manga volume release. It will hit the shelves on August 17, 2020. Here’s how Kodansha describes the manga in English:
High schooler Natsuo is hopelessly in love with his cheerful and popular teacher, Hina. However, one day at a mixer, he meets a moody girl by the name of Rui and ends up sleeping with her. Soon after, his father announces that he’s getting remarried to a woman with two daughters of her own. And who shows up in tow, other than both Hina and Rui?! Natsuo’s outrageous new life starts now!
The manga received a TV anime adaptation in January 2019. It also has 3 million copies in print already, with Kodansha Comics distributing the series in English.
