Goro Miyazaki is back with a new anime movie for Studio Ghibli. This new anime adapts Diana Wynne Jones’ novel Earwig and the Witch. Of course, Jones is also the author behind Howl’s Moving Castle, which was previously adapted into an anime film by Goro’s father, the legendary Hayao Miyazaki. And now, Ghibli has released the very first still images from the upcoming movie.

Aside from the new still images, Ghibli also released a new key visual featuring Aya… AKA Earwig herself!

Earwig and the Witch will make its debut during the Cannes Film Festval as part of their “4 Animated Films” section. It will join the Danish animated film, Flee, French animated film, Josep, and Pixar’s latest flick, Soul. The Cannes Film Festival announcement also revealed that the movie will have an 82-minute runtime.

With Goro Miyazaki at the helm, this movie will serve as Ghibli’s first full 3DCG animated feature film. And his father, the legendary Hayao Miyazaki himself, is part of its planning and development. Meanwhile, Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki is producing the movie as well.

Harper Collins publishes the novel, and here’s how they describe its story:

Not every orphan would love living at St. Morwald’s Home for Children, but Earwig does. She gets whatever she wants, whenever she wants it, and it’s been that way since she was dropped on the orphanage doorstep as a baby. But all that changes the day Bella Yaga and the Mandrake come to St. Morwald’s, disguised as foster parents. Earwig is whisked off to their mysterious house full of invisible rooms, potions, and spell books, with magic around every corner. Most children would run in terror from a house like that . . . but not Earwig. Using her own cleverness—with a lot of help from a talking cat—she decides to show the witch who’s boss.

As for its Japanese TV debut, it looks like NHK has already gotten their hands on it. They will air the movie sometime in winter 2020.
