Almost a year has passed since that horrific arson attack on Kyoto Animation’s Studio 1 Building in Kyoto, Japan. The fire killed 36 people and injured many others, and has become Japan’s most horrific act of mass murder in decades. And as we approach the first anniversary of the tragedy, the Kyoto Animation official website has announced that they will stream a memorial video for the victims on July 18th, the tragedy’s first anniversary. They will stream it via their official YouTube channel.
The video will stream at around 10:30 JST on the anniversary date, and it will be available throughout the day. Unfortunately, the memorial video will only be released in Japanese.
Kyoto Animation also had a memorial visit planned during that day. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they have decided to cancel it. They have also asked the public not to visit the site of the tragedy for safety concerns as well. They have also stated that they will not be accepting condolence gifts of any kind.
The fire killed 35 people, including many legendary anime figures like Amagi Brilliant Park director Yasuhiro Takemoto and Sound! Euphonium character designer Shouko Ikeda. Tributes have been going on for the fallen, while the arsonist has now been arrested and awaiting trial. Unfortunately, it seems that he remains unremorseful of his actions. Kyoto Animation has now begun its rebuilding process. In fact, they have now started recruiting again for the first time since the tragedy happened.
