When it comes to stories about war, many consider Gundam creator and director Yoshiyuki Tomino to be one of the best. After all, he’s the man behind classics like Mobile Suit Gundam and Space Runaway Ideon. And recently, he and Gundam’s character designer Yoshikazu Yasuhiko sat for an interview last August 15th. This was for the 75th anniversary of V-J Day. And there, the usually opinionated Tomino made his thoughts clear.

During the interview, he said that casual use of warships and tanks, such as the ones in KanColle and Girls Und Panzer, are a sign that the younger generation is not taking conflixt seriously. He says that while he does accept some aspects of them as entertainment, he wonders if the use of war themes is OK. He stated that his generation, which grew up with Japan recovering from the ashes of World War II, says war should not be represented that way. The Gundam creator also admits that the representations also make him uncomfortable.

With this, Tomino praised Sunao Katabuchi’s In This Corner of the World anime movie. He described it as a rare work, as it shows war from the eyes of Japanese civilians, and how the military affected civilian life. He would then state that the Japanese people don’t view war from a realist perspective anymore, nor do they discuss whether organisations like the Japanese Self Defense Force (JSDF) is good or bad. However, he did predict that Japan would not see war again, but would be faced more with environmental issues. He even commented sarcastically whether the JSDF would have enough time to create the Space Operations Squadron with all these other issues.

The Gundam creator himself also stated that many people nowadays think of war as being “cool”. To this, the opinionated anime director says that “There’s nothing cool about it”. He added that war must not happen, but we will never be truly get rid of it thanks to the delusions of the people who want it… which is the message of most Gundam anime, whether directed by him or not. Amd with that, he then stated that there will be no war in his next project, but Space Battleship Yamato 2205 will still be released.
