After he is done with Evangelion: 3.0+1.0, Hideaki Anno will be reuniting with Shin Godzilla co-director Shinji Higuchi for a new Kaijuu flick. But this time, it will be focusing on tokusatsu legend, Ultraman! And now, Studio Khara has announced that the movie will premiere in Early Summer 2021.

Director Shinji Higuchi, scriptwriter Hideaki Anno, and associate director Katsuro Onoue made the announcement during the opening ceremony of the Sukagawa Archive Center in Fukushima. There, they revealed a 1/33-scale statue of the legendary tokusatsu hero:

Takumi Saitou will be playing the protagonist, who will be transforming into Ultraman in the movie. Meanwhile, Masami Nagasawa will be playing his partner. The staff also revealed that Hidetoshi Nishijima will also star in the movie with an unspecified role.

Anno’s Studio Khara, which is behind the Rebuild of Evangelion movie series, will be producing the movie itself. Shinji Higuchi and his Higuchi-Gumi team directing the project, while Hideaki Anno, who is currently directing the new Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 movie, will be in charge of planning and scripts.

Studio Khara previously released a statement regarding the project in English:

A new film production of “SHIN ULTRAMAN” was publicly announced today. The new movie will come to theaters in 2021.
Hideaki Anno will join a film team, Higuchi-Gumi led by Director Shinji Higuchi, taking charge of Produce and Screenplay. First draft script has been finished in February 5th, 2019. Anno will fully join the project after finishing his “EVANGELION:3.0+1.0” film.

Well, there you have it folks, straight from the horse’s mouth. It looks like they already have a script, with Anno joining the project right after he completes the final Rebuild of Evangelion movie. Kinda makes you wonder how the two Shin Godzilla directors would tackle this iconic tokusatsu hero, huh?
