Mamoru Hosoda, the legendary anime director behind The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and Wolf Children, is back! His studio, Studio Chizu, announced that he will be working on a new anime movie project. Its title is BELLE, and its Japanese title is Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime. They plan to release the movie in summer 2021, with Hosoda both directing and writing the scripts. They also credit him with the original work as well.
The movie will celebrate Studio Chizu’s 10th Anniversary. The movie itself “will portray an ‘ever-evolving online world’ that takes place in an online world called ‘U,’ which has 5 billion registered users.”
Hosoda himself is quite familiar with stories happening in virtual worlds. In fact, two of his previous projects, Digimon Adventure: Children’s War Game and Summer Wars, focused on that theme. However, it will also incorporate other themes, such as “coming of age, family ties, love between parents and children, friendship that transcends species, the links between our lives.”
