The life-size model of the Freedom Gundam from Gundam SEED is now almost completed. After a special safety prayer ceremony, a crane finally placed its head. Unfortunately, it seems that workers have not yet completed the 18.03 metre Gundam’s feet yet. However, this still marks the first time that a life-size Gundam has officially stood outside of Japan.

They will finish the life-size Gundam and reveal it to the public later today. They will then show it to the public in Shanghai before the opening ceremony on May 28, 2021. Fans can now visit it at the Mitsui Shopping Park LaLaport Jinqiao.

In addition, they will be opening the Gundam Base Shanghai Jinqiao within the same shopping mall later today. Like the Gundam bases in Japan, it will feature plenty of exhibits, as well as sell GunPla! And yes, there will be exclusive Gundam Base Shanghai products coming as well. They will then hold a Gundam Docks Shanghai event at the Gundam Base on May 28 as well.

The decision to use the Freedom Gundam as the Gundam to go up in China has raised a lot of eyebrows though. Fans online have pointed out that while the Freedom Gundam is going up in China, the country itself has been suppressing the freedoms of its own people, from the clamping down of the Hong Kong protests to the treatment of Uighurs.
