From an African slave to a samurai serving the legendary Oda Nobunaga, the black samurai named Yasuke has remained a mystery to historians. And now, MAPPA and Netflix are doing an anime based on him. Netflix Japan even released a brand new PV for the upcoming anime:
Half-Black, half-Japanese actor Jun Soejima will be voicing Yasuke in the Japanese version of the anime, while Lakeith Stanfield voices the African samurai in the English dub. Meanwhile, Takehiro Hira will be voicing Oda Nobunaga. It will have six episodes in total, with LeSean Thomas directing the anime over at MAPPA.
Netflix will begin to stream the limited series on April 29, 2021. Here is how they describe the anime’s story:
In a war-torn feudal Japan filled with mechs and magic, the greatest ronin never known, Yasuke, struggles to maintain a peaceful existence after a past life of violence. But when a local village becomes the center of social upheaval between warring daimyo, Yasuke must take up his sword and transport a mysterious child who is the target of dark forces and bloodthirsty warlords.
