Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa recently sat down for an interview with Fast Company. There, he admitted that they are now looking into making more animated works. This follows Illumination’s upcoming Super Mario Bros. animated movie. And from the looks of things, they’re not just talking about Mario and Luigi. He syas:
“Animation, in general, is something that we are looking into, and not just this [Mario] franchise.”
As for the Mario movie, it will tentatively open in 2022. There’s still no further details about this project yet though, including cast and director. However, Illumination has declared that it was in “Priority Development”.
Illumination founder Chris Meledandri is co-producing the film with Super Mario Bros. creator Shigeru Miyamoto. In fact, Miyamoto is very active in its development and is one of its most creative voices. Expect Nintendo and Illumination to announce more details about the Super Mario Bros. movie, as well as other upcoming Nintendo animated works, in the days to come.
