Ladies and gentlemen, Komi isn’t just getting an anime, but a live-action series as well! NHK has announced that Tomohito Oda’s Komi Can’t Communicate manga will in fact be getting one. It will premiere on September 6 at around 10:45 p.m. JST on NHK General’s “Yorudora” late night drama block.
Elaiza Ikeda, who previously played Asako Natsume in the live-action My Little Monster movie, will be playing Shouko Komi herself. NHK also revealed that Takahisa Masuda will play Hitohito Tadano. They also revealed that the series will have eight episodes.
Meanwhile, Yoshihito Okashita and Eiji Ishii are co-directing the series, while Fumie Mizuhashi is writing the script.
Here is how MyAnimeList describes the manga’s story:
It’s Shouko Komi’s first day at the prestigious Itan Private High School, and she has already risen to the status of the school’s Madonna. With long black hair and a tall, graceful appearance, she captures the attention of anyone who comes across her. There’s just one problem though—despite her popularity, Shouko is terrible at communicating with others.
Hitohito Tadano is your average high school boy. With his life motto of “read the situation and make sure to stay away from trouble,” he quickly finds that sitting next to Shouko has made him the enemy of everyone in his class! One day, knocked out by accident, Hitohito later wakes up to the sound of Shouko’s “meow.” He lies that he heard nothing, causing Shouko to run away. But before she can escape, Hitohito surmises that Shouko is not able to talk to others easily—in fact, she has never been able to make a single friend. Hitohito resolves to help Shouko with her goal of making one hundred friends so that she can overcome her communication disorder.
As for the TV anime, it will premiere in October 2021.Its cast includes Aoi Koga as Shouko Komi, Gakuto Kajiwara as Hitohito Tadano, and Rie Murakawa as Najimi Osana. As for the staff, Ayumu Watanabe will be serving as chief director, with Kazuki Kawagoe directing the new series. Meanwhile, OLM will be animating the series, with Deko Akao doing the series composition, while Atsuko Nakajima is doing the character designs.
